UIK’s Vision Statement: To create a Sonoma County United in Kindness.

UIK’s Mission Statement: To promote acts of kindness that advance social justice, embrace diversity, and champion equity with respect for all.

Background:

The Sonoma County United in Kindness (UIK) project emerged in March 2019 as a response to the escalating rates of hate crimes, discrimination, bullying, and injustice across various sectors in our society. Witnessing numerous commemorations for hate crime victims, the Sonoma County United in Kindness (UIK) was established. In June 2020, the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved and awarded the Gold Resolution, endorsing the UIK Campaign. This resolution encourages government agencies and residents in Sonoma County to actively promote acts of kindness in their daily lives.

Currently, over 3,700 local residents and 54 local organizations have signed and endorsed the UIK project. Additionally, 8 out of the 9 Sonoma County City Councils have published proclamations supporting the Gold Resolution and endorsing the UIK Campaign. Sonoma State University and SRJC have also endorsed and published resolutions aligning with the Gold Resolution. The sixth-grade students from Strawberry Elementary School composed their unique Declaration of Kindness, and we are presently collaborating with Austin Creek Elementary School.

The UIK initiative aims to introduce its principles to schools and businesses in Sonoma County, encouraging them to adopt the Gold Resolution’s tenets. The goal is for schools to create their “United in Kindness” declaration, fostering discussions and practices on kindness, respect, tolerance, inclusivity, equity, and anti-bullying during class sessions. The objective is to cultivate self-guided and positive relationships among students through daily acts of kindness.
